Cabana, Last Day

"The clock on the wall says 3 o'clock. Last call for alcohol!"  Or, more to the point, for Active Directory advice. Mika, Ulf and I are finishing up the day, but there's not much foot traffic since the exhibitors booths are already torn down.

For those who were wondering, the interview with myself and the lovely Susan Bradley is up and viewable on Virtual Tech Ed - of course I think that I look terrible on camera, but you be the judge.

Active Directory questions today - today was "no DCs in my site" day for some reason. To wit: you have a client subnet configured in AD Sites & Services, and a separate subnet that your DCs live on. If you've got multiple locations configured like this, you fire up an MMC console or client authentication only to find that your North Carolina clients are authenticating to DCs in Timbuktu or what-not. This happens because processes like client authentication are "site-aware" - a client will query DNS with "Is there a DC in my site?"  If the answer is no, it will query for any DC, which in a large org usually means the wrong one. You can fix this through Group Policy or through adding a SiteCoverage reg key, as detailed here: SiteCoverage on Technet.

Tonight we're off to Smith & Wollensky for a heaping dose of COW, then I'm back home to Philly tomorrow. Thanks to all who made Tech Ed a great big wonderful event this year, can't wait for New Orleans in 2007!
